Colorado Wildflowers

It has been an unusual year for wildflowers. On the plains and in the foothills, a cool and wet spring engendered floral profusion, if a bit belated. In the mountains, heavy spring snows delayed blossoming, and some flower lovers worry that the alpine flora, robust as it is, might not have enough time to complete a blooming cycle.

Along Colorado’s Front Range and adjoining prairie, the quantity and diversity of species have been a delight to the senses, and what follows is a selection of what I have encountered since our return from Germany in early June.

No need to waste more words. Their eloquence says it all.

Es ist ein ungewöhnliches Jahr für Wildblumen. In der Prärie und entlang des Piedmonts hat ein kühler, nasser Frühling eine Blumenpracht entfaltet, wenn auch etwas verspätet. In den Bergen, wo es noch spät im Frühling schwere Schneefälle gab, wurde das Blühen aufgeschoben, und einige Pflanzenliebhaber befürchten, daß die alpine Flora, wenn sie auch noch so robust ist, eventuell nicht genug Zeit haben wird, um einen Zyklus zu vollenden.

In Colorados Vorgebirge und der benachbarten Prärie bereiten die Zahl und Vielfalt der Arten einen Augenschmaus, und was folgt ist eine Auswahl dessen, was mir seit unserer Rückkehr aus Deutschland Anfang Juni begegnet ist.

Mehr Worte muß ich eigentlich nicht verlieren. Ihre Schönheit spricht für sich.

    • Ich stimme Dir zu, liebe Christa. Die Farb-und Formvarianten scheinen endlos. Ich habe einmal in einem mexikanischen Restaurant frittierte Kaktusblätter gegessen (ohne Nadeln, glücklicherweise), kann ich aber nicht mehr an den Geschmack erinnern. War ziemlich neutral, glaube ich.
      Herzliche Grüße zurück nach Kanada.

  11. What a lovely series, a few of which we grow in the Botanic Gardens here in Melbourne. I’ve never seen a mauve columbine before so that was certainly a treat for my eyes.

  12. It’s interesting to see so many flowers that I encounter here — seven, I believe. And it’s a pleasure to see the white prickly poppy. It’s one of my favorites, and I never can see too many of them.

    • That is interesting. As I have only spent time in Texas airports, I have not had the opportunity to explore its flora. One of these days (though Texas birds are higher on my wish list than plants, I have to admit! 😊).

      I don’t see cream-colored thistles often, but various primroses bloom throughout the summer. We have both white and yellow species, and I have to keep looking them up in my flower guide, as I can’t necessarily tell them apart.

  19. Wunderschöne Fotos von ausgefallen hübschen Blumen! Die wirken auf mich schon sehr exotisch, auch sehr wiederstandsfähig. Aber was für prächtige Farben! Das muß in der Landschaft wirklich ins Auge stechen. Marvellous 🙂
