It has been an unusual year for wildflowers. On the plains and in the foothills, a cool and wet spring engendered floral profusion, if a bit belated. In the mountains, heavy spring snows delayed blossoming, and some flower lovers worry that the alpine flora, robust as it is, might not have enough time to complete a blooming cycle.
Along Colorado’s Front Range and adjoining prairie, the quantity and diversity of species have been a delight to the senses, and what follows is a selection of what I have encountered since our return from Germany in early June.
No need to waste more words. Their eloquence says it all.

Lovely to see these.. I can’t remember ever seeing a pale thistle flower like in your photo.

Thank you, Liz. Most of our thistles are purple, and many of those are invasive species. I don’t see the cream-colored version very often.

Beautiful pictures and a lovely bouquet of wild flowers! Most of them are unknown to me though, I suppose they don’t grow in our country, at least not in the wild. 🙂

Thank you, Meggie. If you showed me a bouquet of Scandinavian wildflowers, I likely would not recognize most of them either. 🌻
Best wishes,

Pretty flowers, but great work with the camera. Not always easy to capture such elegance in nature.

What a lovely series, a few of which we grow in the Botanic Gardens here in Melbourne. I’ve never seen a mauve columbine before so that was certainly a treat for my eyes.

Thank you, Vicki. The Colorado Blue Columbine (Aquilegia coerulea) is our state flower, and it is one of my favorites. I am glad you enjoyed this floral tapestry.

It’s interesting to see so many flowers that I encounter here — seven, I believe. And it’s a pleasure to see the white prickly poppy. It’s one of my favorites, and I never can see too many of them.

That is interesting. As I have only spent time in Texas airports, I have not had the opportunity to explore its flora. One of these days (though Texas birds are higher on my wish list than plants, I have to admit! 😊).

This is a wonderful collection of blooms, Tanja. I was surprised to see the yellow lady’s slipper.

Thank you, Steve. There are very few places where they occur, and I had to be initiated by some orchid lovers.

There are a few spots here in New England, mostly conservation areas or botanical gardens that have them. Oh yeah, and my backyard. 🙂

Happy wildflowers.
The very pale, practically white, pink evening primroses (Oenothera speciosa) grow in Austin, as well. I’ve also seen an occasional cream-colored thistle.

Happy wildflowers and happy wildflower observers, Steve. 😊
I don’t see cream-colored thistles often, but various primroses bloom throughout the summer. We have both white and yellow species, and I have to keep looking them up in my flower guide, as I can’t necessarily tell them apart.

Blumige Grüße an Dich,
