One of my most memorable recent avian encounters was with a species not commonly observed in Colorado. When Rare Bird Alerts from a birding hotspot in Denver kept popping up in my Email inbox day after day in late July, a birding friend suggested a day trip north, to try our luck. The bird in question usually winters in South Florida, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, and breeds in the southeastern and south-central United States. While it occasionally drifts across the state line into eastern Colorado, its occurrence in the central portion of the state was atypical. Nobody knows for certain why some species appear outside their normal distribution, but for birders, this phenomenon results in the opportunity to meet birds not ordinarily encountered.
After my 4 AM alarm jolted me out of a deep sleep, I got a jump start with coffee and a cool shower. We met at a Park and Ride at 5:15, and reached our destination, the Denver Audubon Society’s Nature Center, one hour later. The bird in question had been seen as early as 6:45 on previous days, but that morning, it made us wait. When the guest of honor hadn’t appeared by 8, we couldn’t help but wonder if it had moved on to greener pastures. Fortunately for us (and for my spouse, who always tells me that I am in a better mood when I get to see a life bird), this was not the case, and we, together with a dozen fellow bird lovers, were enthralled to make the acquaintance with what must be among North America’s most colorful creatures. Observers in the past thought so, too, and gave it the distinguished designation “nonpareil,” meaning without equal, or unrivaled.
May I introduce the male Painted Bunting (Passerina ciris). I will leave it to your imagination to picture how this bird got its color.

The word Stieglitz jumped out at me because of the famous photographer Alfred Stieglitz:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Stieglitz
I had no idea till I looked it up just now that Stieglitz means ‘goldfinch’ in German.

That’s funny, Steve, because when my husband and I visited Germany earlier this year, and I told him that I had seen a Stieglitz, he thought of the artist right away. We learned of him during our visits to Georgia O’Keeffe country in New Mexico, and from a film about their very troubled relationship. Here is a link, in case you don’t know it:

Thanks for the link. I’ve requested the DVD from the Austin Public Library. As a photographer, I’ve known about Stieglitz for almost 50 years.

Stunning little creature! Rather different from the ‘little brown jobs’ I chase after over here!
Nice lifer.

Thank you, Brian, it really is spectacular. Just so you don’t get the wrong impression–we have plenty of little brown jobs over here, too, and this degree of colorfulness in a bird is rare, at least in our latitudes. But all my fellow bloggers from Texas seem to see it regularly (I am envious).

Seeing it was super, Liz, but since there was no guarantee that it would sit still long enough for anyone to get a photo, we were extra giddy. 😊

I was so surprised to see this as your rare bird. I’m glad you got to see it, because they are beautiful. They’re also common enough here that I have friends in the hill country who see them from their kitchen windows from time to time. I mostly see pigeons, doves, and bluejays from my window — I’d love to see this one!

I am thrilled that it showed itself to me and many other birders. I am a little envious of everybody for whom this is a common sighting! I hope one will show up among your doves and jays one of these days.
Best wishes,
Tanja

Thank you, Diane. I can relate to choosing this as your favorite bird, it is high on my list right now, but as a birding friend always says, “my favorite bird is the one I am looking at right now.”
I am a little envious of the fact that you get to see this beauty regularly! 🙂

I like what your friend says and it really is true. I love it when I see the cardinals and all the others and I’m in the moment just watching them or grabbing their photo then they are my favorites.

Not only is how this bird got its color open to conjecture, so is how it got its name. While people have speculated about the origin of bunting, the word is listed in dictionaries as being of uncertain origin. To add to the confusion, English has several buntings:
https://www.ahdictionary.com/word/search.html?q=bunting
Notice the hypothesis that one of them is related to the German bunt that means ‘colorful’ and ‘stained.’

Sein herzlich gegrüßt,
Tanja

We were lucky enough to see these brilliant birds during a trip to Texas several years ago. They looked as if they’d spent the night at a wild party in a paint factory!

Lucky you, indeed. Texas is high on my travel wish list because of its avian variety. I like your explanation of how this bird became so colorful. 😊

Wow, fantastisch!

Oh, Tanja, what a wonderful sighting and photos! Who cannot love this bird and it’s beautiful colors!! Congratulations on adding another lifer, this one is superb! I’m still waiting for this one. I had to laugh when you mentioned your husband says your in a better mood when you spot a lifer, mine says the same thing. 😊 You’d think our hubbies would be driving us to new bird sightings every day! 😉

It was an exquisite experience, Donna, one I hope you will share it one of these days.
I read your comment to my husband, but it only elicited a wan smile. I think we will have to continue to drive ourselves to new bird sightings (in all fairness, he has accompanied to some out-of-the way spots, where he was immediately identified as a “nonbirding” spouse, when he sat down in the picnic chair, while everyone else was searching the area with binoculars 😊).

I am laughing, Tanja, on your ‘non-birding’ husband sitting in a picnic chair. On one of our birding outings, I have a photo of my husband laying on a picnic bench seat, while everyone is trying to photograph birds. I don’t think he knows I have that shot! hee hee No, not everyone is a ‘birder’, although I bet yours, like mine, can identify a lot more birds today than they could a few years ago. 😉

And you are absolutely right–whether he wants to or not, my non-birding spouse is learning to recognize at least some birds! 🐦🦆🦉
