Dark days indeed, Tanja. Still digesting the news here. There is solace in the beauty of the natural world. Everything else is looking ugly.

Yes, there is solace in nature. But henceforth, it will be under attack even more than before. 😢

According to The Guardian, “the newly elected US president poses a grave threat to the planet if it blows up the international effort to curb dangerous global heating, stunned climate experts have warned in the wake of his decisive election victory.”

Like Laurie, I am broken hearted at the election results. My small circle of friends and I dread the repercussions on the major superpower’s future (and I don’t even live in the U.S.).
I just don’t understand how someone who should be in jail, can win….(probably with the power of wealth I might suggest). Didn’t those voters learn by the last T administration?

I commiserate, Vicky. And I’m also incredulous not only that he was able to run but win. I’m very, very worried about the future. 😢

We did, Diana. This was only day 1. After 3 days, we had nearly 2 feet! Very unusual for November, but we don’t mind the moisture.

Still sinking in – if such a gentle word is sufficient to encompass such an event. It may be a long winter and the spring is far away but I think it will come.

Devastating times. It is so hard to understand how it is that a climate in crisis does not focus our minds and efforts collectively across the globe. What is it that we plan to do with our one wild and precious planet?

Devastating indeed, Carol. My opinion of humanity as a whole and my outlook about the future continue to worsen. We are short-sighted in the extreme and despite knowing what ought to be done, seem to only live only for today and short-term gains.
(This does not preclude individual humans doing amazing things for others.)

It is hard not to be despondent, but it helps to look out for any signs of encouragement …

We watch the television news every night, scarcely believing what we are being told. The metaphor of winter’s arrival is brutally apt. But I offer you a vision of hope…in the stage play of War Horse there is a song in the English folk tradition that’s called “The Year Turns Round Again”. Its lyrics include these lines:
“I’ll wager a hat full of guineas / Against all the songs you can sing / That some day you’ll love / And the next day you’ll lose / And winter will turn into spring / And the snow falls, the wind calls / The year turns round again / And like Barleycorn who rose from the grave / A new year will rise up again”
There are tears in my eyes as I read those words. We have to believe that winter will turn into spring, and a new year will rise up again. Without hope, we are truly lost.
The lyrics work even better if you can hear them being sung. This link should take you to a recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYd5LT6XHZo

I have not been able to listen to or watch the news ever since that fateful outcome.
Thank you for sharing your vision of hope. Powerful, hopeful words, and a haunting melody. I hope that winter will indeed turn into spring again one day. Not any time soon . . . 😢

Sadly, your post says it all, perfectly and succinctly.
My neighbor is Filipino, and has written award winning poetry about his folks, and their struggle/journey to come to this country. (His name is Oliver de la Paz) . He told me that he was taking a cue from his parents, who are pragmatists. They were saddened to see the election outcome, but not surprised one bit . They are sad that their grandchildren will have to grow up in this world. And yet, they have seen in their lives that “all things shall pass”, and are waiting for this, too, to come around.
I’m spending time processing all this and working on those things that make a difference locally, (I’ve never been so grateful to live in progressive Massachusetts!). Tough times ahead for sure, though.
Stay well, and know that your posts make a difference to so many folks living far and near. Let’s keep our spirits up!
Best,
Julie

Thank you for your comment, Julie.
I hope that your neighbors’ optimistic belief of “all things shall pass” will prove true in this case. I’m not optimistic and find it extremely challenging to maintain a positive outlook. All institutions in this country will be under attack, to say nothing of the environment. What can we expect from a bunch of politicians who think climate change is not real and who care only about the economy rather than ecology?
Mournfully,
Tanja
