The air at 9,507 feet is crisp, even in late July. On this Saturday morning at seven o’clock, the parking lot at Wilkerson Pass along US Highway 24, about an hour’s drive west of Colorado Springs, is not yet as busy as it will be in a few hours, though it already sees a steady coming and going of vehicles. Their occupants make use of the outhouses to relieve themselves of their morning coffee, or take in the scenery. From this high spot, one’s westerly view encompasses the Sawatch Range, portions of which fringe South Park, one of four high mountain basins in Colorado (the others are North and Middle Parks, as well as the San Luis Valley). On this calm day, hot air balloons are an unexpected addition to the scenery.

An diesem Samstagmorgen um sieben ist der Parkplatz am Wilkerson Pass, der etwa eine Autostunde westlich von Colorado Springs entlang der Bundesstraße 24 liegt, noch nicht so belebt, wie er das in einigen Stunden sein wird, doch sieht er bereits ein ständiges Kommen und Gehen. Die Autofahrer machen von den Klohäuschen Gebrauch, und lassen dort ihren ersten Morgenkaffee zurück, oder genießen die Aussicht. Von diesem hohen Punkt umfaßt der Blick nach Westen die Sawatch Bergkette, die an „South Park“ grenzt, einer von vier hohen Talkesseln (die anderen sind North und Middle Park, sowie das San Luis Tal). An diesem windstillen Tag sind Heißluftballons eine unerwartete Zugabe in der Kulisse.

I have left home with a few hours to spare before the beginning of a writing workshop at a destination not far from here. A hiking loop beckons, and as I meander slowly through a meadow rich in grasses and wildflowers interspersed with groves of trees, I am alone with chipmunks and ground squirrels, as well as with a host of other early birds. The haunting background melody of Hermit Thrushes is punctuated by the buzzing of Pine Siskins, and the less melodious utterances of one lone Clark’s Nutcracker, who keeps itself concealed in the forest’s canopy.

Ich bin früh genug von zu Hause losgefahren, um vor Beginn eines Schreibseminars an einem nahegelegenen Ort noch etwas Zeit zu haben. Ein Rundweg lockt mich an, und während ich langsam durch eine gras- und blumenreiche Wiese mit Baumgruppen schreite, bin ich mit Streifen- und Erdhörnchen sowie mit weiteren Frühaufstehern alleine. Die bewegende Hintergrundmusik der Einsiedlerdrosseln wird sowohl von dem Gesirre einiger Fichtenzeisigen als auch von den etwas weniger melodiösen Äußerungen eines einzigen Kiefernhähers unterlegt, der sich im Kronendach des Waldes versteckt hält.

Whatever tumultuous thoughts I might harbor in my restless mind are assuaged by this serene setting, and replaced by gratefulness for being present in the here and now.

 Wie turbulent meine Gedanken auch sein mögen, in diesem friedlichen Umfeld werden sie beschwichtigt, und die Dankbarkeit, im Hier und Jetzt präsent sein zu dürfen, gewinnt die Oberhand.

  4. So a nutcracker is a ‘pine jay’ in German. I see in Wikipedia that actor Kiefer Sutherland “is named after American-born writer and director Warren Kiefer, who directed [Kiefer Sutherland’s father] Donald Sutherland in his first feature film, Castle of the Living Dead.” And I see in Wiktionary that GermanKiefer arose as the melding of older Kien +‎ Föhre, the second component of which is cognate with English fir.
